I'm not officially putting the stuff up for sale here, but I was curious if there was much of a market on here for raw ochre. I've stumbled across a rather large natural outcropping of ochre, especially the yellow variety, and collected a bunch of it. I'm not really sure why I went to the trouble of picking up so much when I have no use for it but, trust me, it's very hard to resist picking up such beautiful (and FREE!!!) material. Mine is in several shades of yellow and some borders on orange. There are small amounts of red which I suspect was created in the past when people built fires nearby. I have no way of knowing how old these hearths are, or if they were purposely done to convert the yellow to red. Neat stuff- you can break it up by hand and some of the larger pieces float in water because they are so light. Mixing red and yellow produces a rusty orange color. I can now see why early people from all over the globe were so fond of this stuff. Anyhow, I was curious how many people on the forum have asked where to buy this. If someone needs yellow ochre really badly, I might send it for free- as long as they pay shipping costs 8)

Yeah Ben, I saw your PM before this, but didn't realize that you were looking for some. I will see if I can get some pics of my ochres posted for you and Jason. I'll be back in the office this coming Friday and will post the pics here-- check back then. Both of you can PM me and let me know what and how much you need. C-ya in a few days.

Can someone help me fix the size of the pic above? I'm not too knowledgable on how to shrink these but I'm sure its too big a file for some peoples PC's to handle. Thanks.

Hi

I have A Djalu that develope dseom esplits and I have repaired . The problem now is the paintwork; The main colours are burnt [red] & yellow so I would be defintely interested in obtaining some of your ochres. Pardon my ignorance but how do you prepare for painting?

If it's a Djalu, it's most likely not ochre but acrylic painting. Their usual brand is "Jo Sonja", colours "read earth" and "yellow oxide". Check http://www.chromaonline.com/chroma/stockists for a retailer near you.

Interesting Christian, I always wondered what the Gurruwiwi's used but I don't think I've ever seen that brand for sale over here. BTW, many acrylics contain ochres, both natural and synthetic-- several different brands have colors named "yellow ochre" and list as the pigment hydrated iron oxide-- the red acrylics go by names like "Indian Red" or "burnt red" and also list some form of iron oxide. In a sense then, acrylics are not so far removed from traditional ochre finishes on didjeridus.

Christian

Thanks for the info. The paint is acrylic. Do you know what type of white and black paint they use?

Regards

Titanium White
Carbon Black

The white is occasionally gapan, gypsum clay.
