Now that I'm practicing more, I'm running into a problem. After 5 or 10 minutes of practice I notice increased difficulty in sustaining the drone. The drone will fail even when I'm just trying to keep it going with no extra sounds or techniques. When this happens it feels like the didj is getting warm and backpressure is increasing. At the same time, my lips are swelling just a little, and it might be they're getting tired or having increased difficulty performing their function.

I have two good US didjes built with wood strips on a mandrel, and a good traditional bloodwood didj from Au. I notice the same problem on all three. All three have beeswax mouthpieces, and I've experimented a lot to get a size that feels comfortble and efficient. All three are easy to play after a short warmup period and for the first 5 or siz minutes I can sustain a drone and practice techniques with little difficulty. Wish I could figure out what't going on. Thanks for your help.

Hi Arcadian and welcome.
One of the biggest problems when beginning is that the embouchure (lip muscles) are not
really strong and one tries to compensate this by applying more pressure between mouthpiece
and lips. This cuts off blood circulation and reduces lip elasticity resulting in loss of drone and
slightly swollen lips. Try to use the lip muscles more and push less and take breaks when you lose
the drone. As the muscles strengthen this problem will vanish.
