My recently purchased didge was a survivor of a massive store fire snd is one of the few instruments to emerge intact , it has a smoky odor but seems to play well . How do I prevent future problems due to such extreme exposure to heat ?

I wouldn't worry about it. It's made of wood and will swell and contract when subject to different conditions. As long as the transition isn't extreme it should hold up well.
