I've been visiting rural Oklahoma for the past week. I didn't bring any of my didges for various reasons, most notably the weather. I'm guessing most people here haven't experienced Oklahoma weather; as my mother-in-law told me during my first visit: If you don't like the weather, stick around. It's quite variable, with sometimes dramatic changes in temperature and humidity. When we arrived it was in the 90s -- this morning it's 54F (12C). I didn't want to risk cracking any of my wooden sticks.

Still, I couldn't resist the urge to play so I went down to our local hardware store and picked up a length of 2" DWV pipe, a flexible reducer coupling and made the following ugly didge:

I sliced Vs into the top end of the reducer and squeezed it together to appropriately size the mouthpiece, then wrapped it with self-adhering rubber tape to seal it all up. Yep, it's an ugly one alright, but it actually plays pretty well, although with very little backpressure, and is good enough to keep me in practice until I get home.

I played it for a friend here who had never heard a didge firsthand, and he liked the sound so much that he wanted to learn himself so we ordered him a starter resin didge from LA Outback.

Nowt wrong with an Ugly Didge!
It plays and gives you enjoyment.
It has also attracted another to swell the ranks of players.
Job Done!!

Hope you leave him with the Ugly to play with.

I started with a Bamboo Didge, and couldnt get a note out of it.
Then I was told by a professional player to start with a bit of 32mm or 1-1/4" waste pipe.
Just sanded the end down (too sharp on my lips) and could get drones almost imediately.
You can even cut it to length to tune it.

There is nothing wrong about starting with whatever you get your hands on.
You can always progress to the megabucks Didges later on when you will know how much you want to spend.

Cheers
